The role of coal in climate change
Coal is very important to Australia:
- Currently, 75% of the nation’s power comes from coal-fired generators.
- It provides $43 billion worth of export income.
- And that accounts for 8% of our gross domestic product.
Unfortunately, this dependence also comes at a cost: burning coal for power produces over one-third of our greenhouse gases. If we continue to consume the earth’s resources at the rate we are, our children will have a dire future. And that would be our shame. Particularly when we can all do something about it, starting with changing to solar power to help wean us off coal.
