EKO Communities

EKO Communities: people power makes solar power affordable

EKO Energy started out as just one man, Erik Zimmerman, who wanted to install a solar system in his home. The problem was it was very expensive at that time. Undeterred, Erik had a really great – but scary – idea. By mortgaging his home, he had enough money to negotiate a much lower bulk rate on a container load of quality solar systems. When they arrived, he spread the word through his neighbourhood, showing them how they could save money, energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions by sharing in the costs of his bulk buy and installing them together to save even more. And so began the first EKO Community, which set a model we still use to this day. So far, we’ve launched 300 EKO Communities to bring solar power to groups of neighbours at the lowest price we can offer.

How do EKO Communities work?

Living in a rural area, you might have thought solar power was out of your reach. But by getting lots of neighbours to bulk-buy, it’s more cost-effective for us (and, therefore, you) to do the inspections and installations as they’re all in the same area. To make this happen, neighbours form EKO Communities with our help.

If you’re interested in joining an existing EKO Community in your area to take advantage of its bulk-buying power and meet some great neighbours, see the list below and contact your local Community Coordinator.
